Vision & Mission
Mission
Mission: African American families from across America will join with kin from Africa and the Caribbean. Participants will explore their history and celebrate the African Diaspora role in the founding and making of America. This event will be held at Chippokes Plantation State Park in Surry County, Virginia which is located across the James River from Jamestown. Chippokes was established in 1619 and is one of the oldest continually farmed properties in the country.
Vision
Vision: The African American Family Reunion Festival’s vision rest upon the belief that some of the Africans who arrived in Jamestown and some who may have arrived as part of earlier exploration groups, settled in Surry where they established families. These families in turn, multiplied and their offspring moved and settled all across America. Indeed, annually Surry County is host to over one hundred African American family reunions and participants return from all across America. Many of these families continue to recognize that their roots are located in Surry.
